Legal tint limits at a glance

Reflectivity
Any windshield or window that is composed of, covered by, or treated with any material or component that presents a metallic or mirrored appearance is prohibited (§ 41-6a-1635(1)(c)). No numeric reflectance limit.

Measurement tolerance
5% — § 41-6a-1635(1)(b): a front side window must allow at least 35% light transmittance 'with no more than a 5% variance observed by a peace officer metering the light transmittance.'
Penalties
Infraction (§ 41-6a-1635(9)). § 41-6a-1635(10) bars a peace officer from requesting that the Motor Vehicle Division or Driver License Division revoke or suspend a registration or driver licence for one or more violations of the windshield (1)(a) or front-side-window (1)(b) standards. § 41-6a-1635(7) separately prohibits having for sale, selling, offering for sale, installing, covering or treating a windshield or window in violation of the section.
Notes
Front side windows dropped from 43% to 35% effective May 7, 2025 (ch. 205, 2025 General Session); windowtintlaws.us still publishes the stale 43% figure, and tinting-laws.com attributes the 35% to a 2022 change. Rear windows, INCLUDING rear side windows located behind the vehicle operator, may carry nontransparent material of any darkness (§ 41-6a-1635(3)(c)) on every body type. § 41-6a-1635(5) is the mirror rule: except for windshield material permitted under (3)(a) and (3)(b), a vehicle with tinting or nontransparent material on ANY window must have rear-view mirrors mounted on both the left and right sides reflecting to the driver a view of the highway to the rear. § 41-6a-1635(4): a windshield or window is considered compliant if it meets the federal statutes and regulations for motor vehicle window composition, covering, light transmittance and treatment. § 41-6a-1635(8) requires anyone subject to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (manufacturers, distributors, dealers, importers, repair businesses) to comply with the federal tinting standards. le.utah.gov renders statute text with JavaScript, so the section was read in a real browser rather than by plain fetch.
Utah tint questions
What is the darkest legal tint in Utah?
For a sedan in Utah, front side windows must let at least 35% of light through, no number is stated for the back side windows, and none for the rear window. Lower VLT means darker glass, so those percentages are floors, not targets, and the meter reads the film and the factory glass together.
Is 20% tint legal in Utah?
No, not on the front side windows. Utah requires at least 35% VLT there and 20% is darker than that, before you even account for the factory glass, which makes the reading darker still. Behind the driver the statute states no VLT number, so 20% may be allowed on the back side and rear windows — read the notes on this page and confirm with the DMV.
Can I tint the windshield in Utah?
