Tennessee window tint laws

For a sedan in Tennessee, front side windows must let at least 35% of light through, back side windows at least 35%, and the rear window at least 35%. Lower VLT means darker glass, so those percentages are floors, not targets, and the meter reads the film and the factory glass together.

No, not on the front side windows. Tennessee requires at least 35% VLT there and 20% is darker than that, before you even account for the factory glass, which makes the reading darker still. The back side windows have a 35% floor, so 20% is too dark there too.

Tennessee's rule for the windshield: Minimum 70% visible light transmittance — material may not reduce the windshield below 70% VLT, with the exception of the manufacturer's standard installed shade band. Per the Tennessee Department of Safety, the windshield CANNOT be covered by a medical exemption.

What the source says: § 55-9-107(b): a person with a medical condition adversely affected by ultraviolet light may submit a statement from that person's physician certifying the condition requires reduction of light transmission beyond the standards in subsection (a). The commissioner submits it to the department's medical review board; if the board finds the exemption warranted it recommends the commissioner authorise it and the degree of tinting exemption appropriate, and the commissioner then supplies a certificate or decal indicating the degree of exemption, which the applicant displays in the vehicle. An aggrieved applicant may appeal under the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act, optionally to the chancery court of the county where the applicant resides. Per the official Department of Safety help page: send the request to Driver.Improvement@tn.gov with the physician's note, a copy of the registration and the driver licence number; processing takes about 3–4 weeks; the windshield cannot be exempted. Confirm the current process with the agency named before you have film installed.
